Gevin to John Hamiltoun of Orbiftoun ane letter to the Marques of Hamiltoun, quhairin ane anfuer of that quhilk he wrett to me anent Mr. George Winram. Item, ane accompt of the contract of Arbroith; and, laft, thanks to his Lordship for my fone Mr. Alexander.

The Erll of Traquhair fent a fervand to Court, and with him fent a packet to Lord Panmuir, quhairin two to him, with the College of Abirdein noon, being Twys- thair letter to me, anent the teinds of Haltoun. Item, a letter to the Bishop of Brechin, and within it the fignatour of the Monaftrie of Arbroith, and defyring him to agrie to a contract betuix Lord Panmuir and him and the toun of Brichen, anent the nominatioun of the baillie. Item, a letter from John Pilmuir. Item, another pacquet gevin to Mr. James Gordoun, direct to the Erl of Stirling, with one to himself and one to Hary, anent Queinfberrie. Item, within it a pacquet to the Juftice Clerk, quhairin to himself from me. Item, a pacquet to him from my fone Mr. Alexander. Item, to Alexander Narn from me, and als from Sir Thomas. Item, one to Mr. Dalzell, one to James Levingstoun, one to the Erll of Annandaill, and one to the Erll of Ancrum and Sir Robert Gordoun; quhilk all I haif defyrit L. Sandfurd to delyver.

With this fervand the Erl Traquhair fent a letter fubfcryvit be him and me to his Majestie, anent Arbroith, with the twa contractis, dockettit be me; and als fent with him my letter to his Majestie, with the signatour of Balgone, quhilk I recommendit to Lord Panmuir, and defyrit that it mycht be returnit to me.

Sent letters with Alexander Alexander, fervitor to the Erl of Stirling, viz. To Erl Stirling, acquainting him, that albeit his fone and I wer of the Committee of the North, get we wer not on the Cabinet Counfell, for a letter wes writtin to his Majestie thairanent, to quhilk nather his fone's hand wes nor myne. Item, a letter to the Lord Panmuir, defyring him to

misknaw that quhilk I wret to him anent Ylaw and the L. Caddell, and in his nixt to gif thanks to the Erl Traquhair for his favors to me. Item, a letter to Erl Annandaill, and within it the nott of the teinds fauld be Lord Stormonth; and als within it a letter from Erll of Rothes to Lady Griffell Seytoun. Item, letters from Thomas Maxwell to the Erl of Annandaill; and last, letters from my fone Mr. Alexander to Hary Alexander: all inclofit in ane gret pacquet to Erl Stirling.

Item, fent thairefter, on 1 Januar, with the faid Alexander Alexander, This went not ane letter to the Erl of Stirling, and within it the fignatour of kills and owenis, and making of malt, dockettit be me. Item, a letter to Hary Alexander his fone, and als ane letter to Sir Robert Gordoun, quhilk wes left out of the former packet. Item, in this letter I wret to the Erl Stirling anent the L. Quhythil, for a letter to the Exchekker anent his buffines of Dingwall. Item, a letter to James Levingstoun, and within it a prefentatioun to the kirk of Stentoun, blank, vacand be Mr. Patrik Cook his deceis; and I told him of Mr. William Mortoun, for quhom Lady Borthwik and Lord Jefter, and Mr. John Lauder, for quhom the Lord Dury.

2 Januar 1636, Setterday, at 5 houris at nycht.

Sent with Wallace of Auchans, letters to Alexander Narn of Sandfurd, from my felf and Sir Thomas, anent Mr. Andro Stevinfoun for the kirk of Stentoun, vacand be the deceife of Mr. Patrik Cook.

5 Januar 1636.

Sent with a Frenfche gentilman, quho come to fie the country, and returnit poft, a pacquet to Lord Panmuir, quhairin one to him, to wrytt to Erl Traquhair, for renewing of his renunciatioun off the annuity. Item, a pacquet to Erl Roxburgh, with letters in it to the Erl of Lauderdaill, anent Mr. Andro Stevinfoun; but none from my felf, but from Mr. Robert Burnett, Mr. James Adamfoun, principall. Item, letters from me and my fone Sir John to James Levingftoun, Juftice Clerk, Alexander Narn, for it. Item, ane pacquet from my fone Mr. Alexander to the Mafter of Dalzell.

Item, letters to Erl Stirling, Bishop Brichen, and to James Levingstoun, with a form of warrand from his Majeftie to the Bishop of Edinburgh, anent Stentoun kirk. Item, letters to Juftice Clerk and L. Sandfurd, quhairin I wrytt of the fignatour of Jufticiary, but send it not, becaus John Bellenden wes not ready.

16 Januar 1636.

This fignatour of Jufticiary dockettit be me, 15 Januar 1636, with a letter to the Justice Clerk, and another to Mr. William Elphinftoun, inclofit in a pacquet direct to the Juftice Clerk.

Item, a letter to the Lord Panmuir, and within it my fone Sir Thomas his 2 fignatouris, one vpon L. Chester Cheflie?] his dimiffioun of place and penfioun; the vther a fimpill ratificatioun of Advocat Deput; and a letter to the Erl off Stirling to dockett aither of them, as the Lord findis his Majestie inclynit. Thir fent inclofit in a packet direct to the Erl of Stirling, quhilk I delyuerit to Mr. James Gordoun, 16 Januar 1636.

23 Januar 1636, Setterday.

Sent a pacquet to the Erll of Stirling, with a brother of Mr. Robert Burnettis, quho wes going to the young Erl of Merfchel, quhairin twa pacquets to Lord Panmuir, with the contract of the bailliery of Brichen. Item, the Erl of Mar his letter to him and Erl of Stirling. Item, my letter to the Erl Stirling. Item, my letter to the Erl of Annandaill, with a tikket thairin anent and Thomas Maxwell's letters. Item, a letter to James Maxwell from Sir John Scott.

25 Januar 1636, Mononday.

Sent with the Erl Kynnoul a letter to Lord Panmuir, defyring him to ask from the Erl Merschell his fervand, that pacquet quhilk cam from John Pilmuir, quhilk wes not inclofit in myne, becaus I had delyuerit myne befoir it cam; remitting to his confideratioun a matche betuix the Erl and his dauchter; and als in this fent a letter to Erl Ancrum, to caus prent Francifcanis Vllifemus [Florentius Volufenus?], or to fend him heir to me to be prentit, becaus Mr. Robert Balcanquell wes importuning me to haif him reftorit, as ane auld monument of Scottis antiquity.

30 Januar 1636, Setterday.

Item, a pacquet to Lord Panmuir, quhairin two to him felf, with the copy of Abirdein thair letter; and the vther anent the Mem.-This went Bishop of Aberdein and Mr. William Gordoun, thair defyr of a farther not quhill 4 Feduty, ratifeing the auld tak, and geving of new for that farther space, and for the rector's lyftyme, and 5 yeiris efter. Item, a letter to Justice Clerk. Item, to L. Sandfurd, with a letter to the Countefs of Home, anent Erls Murray and Lauderdaill.

6 Februar 1636.

The young L. Mynto Steuart went poft, and fent with him a letter to the Lord Panmuir, anent my conference with the Bishop of Brichen efter his return, anent Maffondew, and the bailliery. Item, anent my reffait of the writtis of Innerpeffer, from Sir Andro Flefchor, to be tranfumit; and, laft, anent L. Morphie, if I fal perfew him on the decreit arbitrall, becaus he hes gevin me no anfuer of my letter anent the fetting and choifing.

11 Februar 1636.

Sent with young L. Barnis Cunyngham a pacquet, quhairin to Erl This Thursday, Stirling, anent the fignatour for xvim merkis yeirly, and the fuperplus to crying doun the come to the Secretary. Item, to Lord Panmuir, anent admiffioun of M. dollors to lvjs, quhilk wes inRobert Norie be the Bifchop of Brichen and cheptor. Item, to caus him stantlie proclamit.

Delyverit to Alexander Bruce a pacquett to the Lord Panmuir, quhairin to him, advertising him of the letters from E. Southefk and Orbistoun to the Lord Marquis of Hamiltoun, with his bak band, quhilk I defyr him to afk bak from the Marquis. Item, defyring him to fend bak the contract anent the bailliery of Brichen. Item, a letter to James Levingstoun, and within it one from John Sempill.

13 Februar 1636.

Item, delyverit to Alexander Bruce ane vther letter to the Lord Panmuir, and within it the prefentatioun to the vicarage of Panbryde to Mr. Arthour Granger, fcholemaster of Arbroith, but his name blank, becaus it is blank in the prefentatioun to the perfonage figned be the Kingis Majeftie.

19 Februar 1636, Fryday.

Sent with Sir James Lockart a pacquet to Erll of Stirling, quhairin a pacquet to the Lord Panmuir, and in his a letter to his facred Majeftie, with the paper of my accompt of his Majeftie's effaires. Item, a nott of the form of his Majeftie's letter to me, quhilk beris the approbatioun of Ylau.

24 Februar 1636, Weddinfday.

This day my two fones Mr. Alexander and Mr. James tuik journey, the one to Court, and the other to France; and gevin to Mr. Alexander xxxvij doubill angels, quhilk, with the 13 quhilk he had, makes 50 doubill angels ; and als gevin to him job of rydals of gold for his journey. Item, gevin to Mr. James 50 doubill angels, with a Portugal ducat of gold. 1 merkis of gold for his journey, with fum 30ß fterling of xijf pieces.
