This nycht a fervand of Coronell Erfkin's cam from Court, quho affurit that his Majeftie wes in Durehame.

His Majeftie's fchippis cam to Infche Keyth, in number 29, and fend in thair commiffioun to the nobilmen, quhairof the Marques of Hamiltoun General.

Item, this day Charls Erfkin, my fone, defyrit to put within my litill irne kift [his coffer with jewellis, quhilk wes done, and I gaif him the key thairof. Item, Mr. Alexander Burnett patt thairin, befoir it wes lockit, ane litill bunsche of paperis pertening to him.]

This day the Parliament fencit be his Majeftie's Commiffioun vnder the Parliament fencit Quarter Seill, and continewit to 23 July nixt.

Item, pacquet fent, quhairin to his Majeftie felf, and to the Lord Panmuir, and Secretar, and Erl Roxburgh; in it to my fone Mr. Alexander, to be fent to him from Neucaftell to Londoun; within quhilk is a letter from Hary to his mother.

This day report of the conflict in the North, befyd Innerrury, brocht hither be young Ludquharne; quhair Lord Banff, Lord Haddo, Donald Ferquharfoun, and vtheris of the name of Gordoun, fett vpoun the Maifter off Forbes and his companies, being in horf and fut 600 men, and Banff not above iiije, with fum feild peices; and patt the vther to flicht, without fo muche as a strik on the vther fyd; and the Maister of Forbes hurt or takin, and twa or thrie killit.

This day, in the morning, I lying in my bed, betuix fyve and fex, and, the greiff off the report of the disaster in the North, puring forth my hart to the Lord in prayer, and faying, "Lord, pitie thy pure Kirk, for thair is no help in man!" I hard a voce faying to me, as I did heir it of befoir, on thrid Apryll laft, " I will pitie it." For quhilk I bliffit the Lord; and belevis that it fal be as my Lord hes now twys fpokin to me.

Lent to John my long carabin of rowet work all indentit, with the brace iron key and gold ftring, gottin from Mr. John Erles?

At nycht the pacquet cam to me, with letters from Erl Stirling and Lord Panmuir, teftifeing his Majeftie's approbatioun of the prorogatioun of the Parliament to 23 July.

This day ane Inglische herald brocht a new proclamatioun from his New proclamaMajestie, daitit at Neucaftell, May 1639; quhairin his Majeftie declaris that he cravis nothing of his fubiectis but civill obedience, and that he is come to hold his Parliament; and thairfoir commands all his Majestie's fubiectis quho ar gathered in armes to remoue thamfelfis 10 myl thairfra, vnder all higheft payne. Item, a letter from the Erl Holland to the nobility, to that famyn end.

To this the nobility gaif anfuer by a letter to the Erl of Holland, and be Ansuer thairto. fending the L. of Blacater, with inftructiounis, to the nobility of Ingland,

defyring to haif conference with fome off them; and in the meantyme, quhill thai gatt anfuer, fould obey, and retire thair armies and forces ten myles from the Bordour, provyding that the Inglifche did alfo keip thair forces bak from the Borderis.

The pacquet fent to Erl Stirling, quhairin one to him, and within it to the Thefaurer Deput. Item, one from me to Lord Panmuir, quhairin from the Counteẞ of Merfchell 2, and from Angus 3.

29 May, Weddinsday, 1639, Edinburgh.

About midnycht, as I wes regrating to the Lord the calamitie off his Kirk, and humblie praying his Majeftie to arrife to the help thairoff, and with teares vrging, calling vnto him, Arryfe! I hard thir words, "I will arryfe." And within half hour efter, the horne blew with a pacquet.

Item, I went away toward Hadingtoun, to meit with the Erll of Rotheß, but he wes gone to Dumbar; quhairvpon I went to

quhair I ftayit till 6 Junij; and on 6 Junij, being Thursday, I went to Lammermuir, toward Bervick, be the convoy of one William Wauchop; and came, about tuelf hours of the day, till Foulden, quhair I wes most courteouslie entertainit be John Wilkie and his lady, and abaid with them till 20 Junij, at quhilk I returnit to Edinburgh.

On Fryday, 7 Junij, I kiffit his Majeftie's hand; and had conference with his Majeftie on Mononday the 10, and on Twyfday, Weddinfday, and Thursday; as my nott made thairvpon will testifie.

On 8 Junij, lying in my bed, betuix 1 and 2 in the morning, I wes pouring furth my hart to the Lord; and in fo gret neceffitie, being to fpeik with the King, I faid, "My Lord, will not thy Majestie help and affist me?" And I hard a voice faying, "I will, doubt nott."

Item, at Foulden, on 14 Junij, quhilk wes Fryday, 1639, being anxious in fpirit for the event and fucceß of God's caus, I hard this voice," Latt me work it."
