The Jewish Diaspora saw communities spring up in a variety of Hellenistic and Roman cities although studying the nature of these communities has been difficult for a number of reasons. These twelve papers, from a conference held in Dublin in 1997, bring together a range of sources and other evidence on the Jewish presence in Jerusalem, in Rome, Italy and North Africa, Asia Minor and Egypt. The contributors take a variety of approaches, considering social identity, everyday life, religious practice, population numbers, calendar-reckoning and individual communities.
