PRELIMINARY NOTICE.

THE present imprint is from the unique Manuscript in the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow, entered in the Catalogue thus:

"A Stately Poem called the Destruction of Troy, wrote by Joseph of Exceter, who lived in the reign of King Henry the Second, from 1154 to 1189. In old English verse. Folio, (on paper), written in a small cramp hand."

The mistake as to the author of the work increased very materially the difficulty and labour of the transcription, and of the preparation for the press. When the first sheet was printed a careful comparison of it was made with the Bellum Trojanum of Joseph of Exeter, and it was soon found that the MS. poem was not a translation of that work. A similar comparison with the histories, said to be by Dares and Dictys, showed that although they had much in common, the poem was not translated from them. At last the transcript was compared with a MS. of Guido de Colonna's Historia Trojana, and it was then seen that it was a translation, though not a continuous one, of that work. The greater portion of the MS. is certainly written in an undeniably "cramp" hand, but at various parts the writing is very beautiful, and easily read, having been executed apparently with great care. The reason of this remarkable difference did not at first occur to the transcriber. The evident mistakes in the spelling and the peculiarity of these mistakes at last suggested to him, when he was far advanced, that the carefully executed portions were copied at leisure from, perhaps, the original, while the rest was less carefully taken down from dictation by the copyist, who seemingly did not know the words he wrote down, and spelt them from the sound. Further examination proved that this conjecture was the right one, and fully accounted for the differences in the spelling, otherwise inexplicable.

Further particulars regarding the Manuscript, its language, and supposed author, will be given in the Preface and the Introduction. G. A. P.
