First, and only uncastrated, edition; most carefully sup-
pressed by the Court of Rome.
"Cette Histoire est écrite avec beaucoup de feu, et d'un
style très vif, contre la Cour de Rome et tous les ecclé-
siastiques, que l'auteur a peu ménagés. Elle ne fut
pas plutôt mise au jour, qu'elle fit un bruit considé-
rable; qui faisant craindre à son auteur des suites
funestes pour sa personne, lui fit prendre la résolution
de s'expatrier, pour se mettre à l'abri des mauvais
traitemens qu'il couroit risque d'essuyer. Le parti
qu'il prit fut le plus sage, car peu de temps après qu'il
se fut évadé, il vint un ordre de l'arrêter de la part de
l'Inquisition; mais comme on ne peut le mettre à exé-
cution, on fit saisir sur le champ tous les exemplaires
de son ouvrage, que l'on supprima avec grand soin, et
qui furent condamnés à être jettés au feu. Cette sup-
pression les rendit tout-à-coup très rares, parceque ceux
qui s'en étoient procurés quelques exemplaires, les
tinrent alors soigneusement cachés, ce qui en fit con-
sidérablement augmenter la valeur dans le commerce.
On en a fait une nouvelle édition à Genève depuis
quelques années; mais cette réimpression est bien
moins considérée, et l'on donne toujours la préférence
à l'édition originale."-De Bure.
