THE NATIONAL PROVINCIAL BANK LTD., Cornmarket Street, Oxford

THE Subscription to the Society, which constitutes full membership for
private members and libraries, is £3. 3s. (U.S. members $9.00, Canadian
members $9.75) a year for the annual publications, due in advance on the 1st
of JANUARY, and should be paid by Cheque, Postal Order, or Money Order
made out to 'The Early English Text Society', to the Hon. Secretary, Early
English Text Society, R. W. Burchfield, 40 Walton Crescent, Oxford. In-
dividual members of the Society are allowed, after consultation with the
Secretary, to select other volumes of the Society's publications instead of
those for the current year. The Society's Texts can also be purchased separ-
ately from the Publisher, Oxford University Press, through a bookseller, at
the prices put after them in the List, or through the Secretary, by members
only, for their own use, at a discount of 2d. in the shilling.

The Early English Text Society was founded in 1864 by Frederick James Furnivall, with
the help of Richard Morris, Walter Skeat, and others, to bring the mass of unprinted Early
English literature within the reach of students and provide sound texts from which the New
English Dictionary could quote. In 1867 an Extra Series was started of texts already printed
but not in satisfactory or readily obtainable editions.

In 1921 the Extra Series was discontinued and all the publications of 1921 and subsequent
years have since been listed and numbered as part of the Original Series. Since 1921 nearly
a hundred new volumes have been issued; and since 1957 alone more than a hundred
volumes have been reprinted at a cost of £40,000.

In this prospectus the Original Series and Extra Series for the years 1867-1920 are
amalgamated, so as to show all the publications of the Society in a single list. In 1963 the
prices of all volumes down to O.S. 222, and still available, were increased by one half,
and the prices of some texts after O.S. 222 were also increased, in order to obtain additional
revenue for reprinting.
